The red envelope tradition is practiced in China and other Asian countries, traditionally around times of celebration and community. This can include weddings, birthdays, and Chinese New Year. The rectangle shape, resembling ancient shields, symbolizes protection. The envelopes are usually beautifully decorated with red and gold as this the color red symbolizes good luck power, abundance and is used to ward off evil spirits.
Traditionally called an Ang Pow, they go by many names such as:
