Flamingoes live in tropical and subtropical areas of South American, the Caribbean, Africa, India, and the Mediterranean. They number in the millions worldwide. Although not migratory, flamingoes will move within their range for better breeding or feeding grounds.

History: Flamingoes are thought to have appeared around 30 million years ago, and they are related to storks, herons, and ibises, and other long-legged birds that live near water. Scientists have long struggled to classify flamingoes because they share traits with such a wide variety of other birds.
