Cats are the second-most popular pet in the United States behind freshwater fish. They were certainly domesticated in Egypt, and they were likely domesticated separately in ancient China as well. Today, there are more than 70 domesticated breeds.

History: Because domestic cats appear in ancient Egyptian art earlier than in the records or artwork of other civilizations, archeologists assume they were first domesticated there. However, geneticists have added some assurance to the claim with a study that found today's domesticated cats descended from west Asian wild cats around 8,000 BC.
