Ra brings sunlight, energy, growth and warmth to the world. In ancient Egyptian, his name simply means, “sun.” Ra was considered to be king of the gods and became the patron deity of the pharaoh. The ancient Egyptians believed that Ra created himself out of Choas and then he created all of the other gods and the Universe. Ra is usually depicted in human form, with the head of a falcon, crowned with a sun disc and encircled with the sacred cobra Uraeus.

It is believed that every day Ra would sail across the heavens bringing the light to the Earth and at the end of the day he would be swallowed by Nut and sailed to the Underworld, with the moon taking his place to light up the world. But every day at dawn, Ra was reborn and would light the sky once again. The ancient Egyptians built temples for Ra that were left open, intending for the light of Ra to shine through. Ra has been worshiped since the 25th and 24th centuries BCE and although this god has transformed and changed throughout the centuries, the original aspects of Ra can be found in many deities.
