Over thirty million people in the United States have used psychedelics according to a 2010 National Survey. A critical mass of research studies documents the therapeutic benefits of psychedelics but only when used in a safe setting with trained guides. Swimming in the Sacred reports on interviews with the most experienced psychedelic guides, all of them women. These women have hard-earned wisdom based on their personal experiences and their decades of sitting with clients as they traverse unseen realms. However, these women remain in the shadows as their work lies outside legal structures. Their perspectives are unique – their relationship to the sacred medicines, their shamanic understanding of healing, their reliance on intuition, their esoteric perceptions of energy, and communion with spirit.
