The winds are shifting again, and not in a direction we’d hoped for.

You may have heard the troubling reports: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids have resumed with renewed aggression across the nation and in Florida, spreading fear and confusion among immigrant families, workers, and communities who call this place home. Already traumatized migrant foster children are being removed from their foster homes and put into government custody in what can only be called cruel actions targeting our most innocent and vulnerable, not harden criminals posing a danger to society.

Meanwhile, “Alligator Alcatraz” — the controversial, detention facility built in the Everglades without adequate protections from Florida weather — has sparked alarm among activists, local tribes who call the Everglades home, and legal and environmental advocates, who warn that it’s a symbol of escalating illegal incarceration of the most vulnerable among us.

We are heartbroken — and we are paying attention.
